Details for the 7th Annual Madison Tecmo Tournament are now finalized.

What: “Tecmo VII, The Hoss Whisperer”

When: March 5, 2011

Where: Logan’s Madtown, 322 W. Johnson Street, Madison, Wisconsin 53703

Field Size: Expecting around 88-100 competitors, max of 128

Tournament Website:

If you did not recently receive an email from [email protected] containing website login and password information, you will have to provide the website with a valid email. At that point, a password will be sent to your email account and you will then be in a position to activate your account. Once activated, you'll be able to sign up for the tournament.

Tournament Rules & Format: All of this information is available on the tournament website, as are past tournament results, pictures, and a general tournament history. Eventually, the website will incorporate results from other tournaments (Ohio, Chicago, etc).

Equipment Needed: This tournament may need as many as 16 systems to operate properly. If you can bring an NES, a cartridge, or a television to the tournament, please indicate such during the registration process (the website will seek this information incidental to your registration). Any assistance in this regard is appreciated.

Special Thank You: Thanks to both Avgtsbplayer and the Child of Destiny (CoD) for their tireless efforts on the website in the last few weeks. Both did an excellent job and without their hard work and Tecmo dedication, this website simply would not have been possible.

Questions: If you have a question potentially applicable to all competitors (rules, tournament format, etc), please post such below. This is the official tournament thread. If you have an individual question that requires our attention (should be rare), you can reach us at [email protected].

Final Word: Last year’s tournament had 88 competitors from at least 11 different states. We expect a similar number of participants this year. Be advised that many a competitor in this tournament has professed pre-tournament “Tecmo greatness” only to be dispatched upon completion of group play. In short, the collection of talent at this tournament demands nothing less than your very best. The offseason OTA’s are over. Tecmo training camp has officially commenced. Hope to see you all in Madison on March 5, 2011.

A list of those already signed up for "Tecmo VII: The Hoss Whisper" is displayed at the bottom of the website's Tecmo VII page. Translation: from the main page, click on Tournaments, click on Tecmo VII, and scroll to the bottom. If your name does not appear, you have not yet signed up for the tournament.

Not a big deal, but there seems to be a problem with overall record and record vs past champs. There are a couple of guys with more losses vs previous champions than they have total losses.

Maybe I'm crazy.

You're right Flo. Right now, a competitor's record displays only Madison results while the record vs. former champs includes all tournaments (not just Madison). That's why a guy can be 0-0 in the Madison tournament and 0-1 vs. past champions (i.e. he played a champion in a tournament other than Madison). Eventually, we will have a link that displays a competitor's total record, not just his record in the Madison tournament. Our website guru simply has too much on his plate right now.

A few quick Tournament updates:

(1) Still no luck securing Hostetler's personal appearance. The PR/Marketing Director is officially on the "hot seat" (you heard me Erin);

(2) Ohio's Vogt crew (the self-proclaimed 513) is officially out. Rumor in the Madison ranks is that it's POTD (post-Ohio Tournament depression);

(3) BestinWorld is officially in. Skunkerofbestinworld, by contrast, may as well be out. He is a shell of his former self since getting serious with his g/f. He doesn't know if he's afoot or on horseback, in a Tecmo sense anyway;

(4) Lots of new faces this year and plenty of emails boasting of Tecmo supremacy. Have my doubts that another total unknown can take the tournament by storm, but I suppose forewarned is forearmed. In any event, advancing from group play this year will likely be more difficult than ever;

(5) A reminder to post any rules questions here. One question we keep fielding is whether you can put a RB at WR (i.e. the inverse of the rule prohibiting placement of a WR in the RB slot). Putting a RB at the WR slot is permissible.

As if Erin reads the boards.

Isn't that what Kurtz had in Apocalypse Now?

Thanks for "forearming" us.

110 guys are presently signed up, many of whom are coming from out of state. If traveling from out of state, and especially if your journey necessitates airline travel, please make your travel arrangements now. Do not wait. And please do not notify us a few weeks before the tournament (or during tournament week) that you have not made appropriate travel accommodations. That is immensely problematic for us because we divide everyone into groups of 4 a few weeks pre-tournament. When someone cancels in the last few weeks, we're forced to juggle groups around in an effort to avoid creating a "group of death." Sometimes we are successful and sometimes we are not. So again, please do everyone a favor and make your travel plans now. If you need to cancel, better to do so now than a month from now.

Thanks guys. The Tecmo courtesy is appreciated. Rest assured we are preparing for an unbelievable turnout and another great tournament on March 5.

Isn't that what Kurtz had in Apocalypse Now?

It's unknown whether Kurtz had Post-Ohio Tournament Depression (known in certain circles as POTD, though still not formally recognized by the DSM IV). Some Tecmo scholars maintain that he suffered from a chronic Fumbilitis condition exacerbated by his stubborn insistence on using Awalt to return kicks with the Cowboys. Still others are of the opinion that he suffered from recurring nightmares of Kevin Greene eating his children.

One radical school of thought believes that Louis Lipps' slowness and repeated dropped passes brought him to the threshold of madness. This theory is explored in detail in the film Apocalipps Now.

What we know for sure is that he looked deep into the Tecmo code, and saw something dark there that destroyed his faith in humanity. The horror indeed.

They have released a DSM V and I believe Post-Ohio Tournament Depression. Symptoms listed in the DSM V are the following:

1. Repeated denial of the existence of an Ohio tournament

2. Refusal to leave the state of Ohio to head to another tournament

3. Repeated claims of supremacy that make no sense to a wider world

4. An inability to refer to a group of people by name, instead, using a strange numerical method

What we know for sure is that he looked deep into the Tecmo code, and saw something dark there that destroyed his faith in humanity. The horror indeed.

As evidenced by his quote: "We must kill them. We must incinerate them. Lipps by Lipps...Greene by Greene...Vinny by Vinny...Hoss by Hoss..."
