What: Tecmobowl.org Tecmo Super Bowl Tournament
Where: Lincoln, Nebraska @ Luckies Lounge - http://www.luckieslounge.com/ - Near the Lincoln Airport, the bar is part of the Travel Lodge behind the McDonalds - 1101 West Bond Street Lincoln, NE
When: Saturday, Jan 19th, 2013 - Tournament Check-in between 11-11:45am, game play to start at 11:45 am
How much does it cost? - $20. Pay at the event. There is an ATM if you're the guy who never has cash.
Tournament Limit? - Tourney will be capped at 64 players
Is there a payout? - Payout will be for the top 4 finishers based on the number of people that show up at the event. I'm working on a belt/trophy for this year. Also there will be a raffle for some items from the Tecmo Store so even if you don't end up in the top 4 you can walk away with swag.
Will there be food? - This also happens to be one of the best BBQ joints in Lincoln. Additionally we're working on drink specials that I will announce when I know them.
Accomdations? - There is a hotel connected to Luckies, Travel Lodge - (402) 475-4971 Their website currently seems jacked and wouldn't show me there is a room open..for JANUARY! Called in and they quoted me $59. Also if you mention Luckies Lounge you should be able to get them to discount the room $10
How long with this take? The goal is to be done by no later than 7. Last year's tourney was done by 6.

Format

4 person groups will play world cup style to determine seeding into a single elimination tournament. The semi final losers will play for 3rd/4th place.
The amount of people to advance to the tournament and/or available systems will determine

Rules
"Madsion Rules" as originally defined by the group at "Tecmo Madison"

  • Team Selection & Coin Toss: A manual coin-flip will precede each game. The coin-flip winner will choose the matchup (i.e. the two teams). The coin-flip loser then selects either (a) one of the two teams or ( B) his preferred controller. If the coin-flip loser selects his preferred controller, the coin-flip winner selects a team first.

  • “One Matchup Once” Rule: The coin-flip winner can only select a particular matchup once throughout the entire tournament. For instance, if Player A wins the toss and selects Packers-Browns, Player A cannot call that exact matchup for the rest of the tournament. Player B, however, is free to select that matchup later in the tournament.

  • Customizing Playbooks and Lineup Changes: Customizing playbooks is permissible. You can access your “change” screen (screen where you check player conditions and make substitutions) only twice per half. This helps speed up the games.

  • WR or TE at RB: A WR is at RB only if, upon accessing the starting lineup/change screen, the WR appears in a RB slot (as opposed to a WR slot). This is prohibited. WRs that remain in a WR slot may, however, carry the football. This comes into play with teams having only 1 RB slot, such as the Lions, Chargers, Cardinals, Oilers, Falcons, and Redskins. When selecting matchups, therefore, be aware that Ricky Sanders and Earnest Givins can carry the football on plays in which they remain in a WR slot (i.e. offset I and toss up).

  • Ties: Although ties are permitted in the tournament’s “group play” portion, such are not permitted in the single-elimination portion of the tournament. If a game ends in a tie after overtime, a new game will begin, and the first player to score in the new game is the winner.

  • Lurching: Lurching is prohibited. If you want to rush with a DL, you must either go outside the offensive tackle or “popcorn” someone on the offensive line. You cannot simply go around your blocker and dive. Note that this rule does not apply to LBs.

  • Nintendo Malfunctions: If there is an equipment failure in the first half, games will be replayed from the start. If equipment malfunctions in the 2nd half, only the second half is replayed. In that event, the scores from each half are added together to obtain a final score. If the game was uncompetitive or the equipment malfunctioned due to human error, the tourney organizers reserve the right to declare a winner without replaying any portion of the game.

  • Tournament Disputes: Matt Knobbe is the tournament referee. He will decide all disputes unless he is a player in the game. If he is a player in the disputed game, Travis Reinsch will resolve the dispute.

  • Controllers: Tournament competitors are not allowed to bring their own controller to use in games. Tournament organizers will coordinate obtaining equipment for the competition.

Location will be the same as last year - Luckies Lounge by the airport.

How many of their 28 tourneys do they expect you to attend?

I use the "Pure Tecmo" theme and I can't see some of the words in your 1st post Knobbe. FYI

Noted. I would suspect that the number of people who use the PT theme and are coming to this tourney is around the 1-4 range.

At 10 guys "officially" signed in and getting to 40 will be a breeze with the usual suspects.

It's the 40-64 guys that will be the toughest.

As just general advice, If you ever think about doing one of these tourneys, don't be afraid to grow them.

I started with 24 and then popped up to 36 last year and that's after doing tourneys that were around the 20s years before.

The first Tecmo Madison was 20 people.

In other words, it can take time to build up a following and/or to learn how to run and manage an event. Just an fyi for people thinking about running their own tourneys in the future.

I see that I'm the backup dispute resolver. It's an honor. :)

Haha...I was going to ask you but I figured you would do it. ;)

Hopefully we don't have to play each other and have an issue or this might be the resolution

Knobbe am I one of the "official" sign ups? I entered my info in the form but didn't know if I did it right or it went through because I didn't get a confirmation email.

I'm looking to try to bring at least 1 other guy to this tourney, really looking forward to chatting some people up. I'm going to try not to drink 6-8 32 oz beers on an empty stomach like Madison VIII so I can actually have a conversation past 5pm.

Confirmation? That's probably a good idea.

Yup, you're in and I'll post a list here soon to serve as a double check on the confirmation/public shaming of people who should have already signed up

    • Possible Long Island, NY Tournament - 8-13-16
      By banditra101801
      Good afternoon everyone.

My name is George and I am new to TecmoBowl.Org. I am the new Volunteers Coordinator for the Long Island Retro Gaming Expo which is planned to take place on August 13th, 2016 at the Upsky Hotel in Hauppauge, Long Island, New York. Here is the link to information about the expo: http://expo.liretro.com/

I personally suggested to the organizers that there should be a Tecmo Bowl tournament at the expo. At the moment, I am trying to gather information about how to run a Tecmo Bowl tournament and make it attractive to not only the general attendance, but also the Tecmo Bowl community. Hopefully, once I gather information and have discussions with the organizers about this, I hope Tecmo Bowl will be added as a tournament and the tournament can be promoted and advertised for the expo. If there is anyone from New York/Long Island who would be able to assist me with the rules and format, and, in general, if it was possible to get feedback on how to make it successful, I would greatly appreciate it. Also, if you would like to run a Tecmo Bowl tournament at the expo, I can provide you the contact information to the Events Coordinator and continue further discuss. Plus, if you are from the area and want to be a general volunteer, please let me know. We do not have the incentives program finalized at the moment, but we are trying to make it reflect our appreciation for your sacrificed time and dedicated volunteerism. For the tournament, I would like to keep it at Tecmo Bowl for the NES, even though I personally own and like Tecmo Super Bowl for the SNES better .

Thanks for all your feedback and support. I really hope to create a successful Tecmo Bowl tournament for everyone and get to meet the Tecmo Bowl community at the expo!

P.S. I am also gathering information for NHL 94. We had a tournament last year, but the numbers were far less than expected. Just like Tecmo Bowl, I hope to gather information about the game and discuss with the organizers to add a NHL 94 tournament back into the expo and promote its inclusion in advertising, as well. Please message me if you have any information about NHL 94 or the appropriate forum to go to. Thanks.

      By trojan1979
As Tecmo Milwaukee approaches, we are GBLAN are going to put the equipment through its paces by hosting a tournament a week from today.  The stakes are low, but so is the cost to participate, only $10.  Standard Madison game rules apply.  Group play will be followed up with a double elimination bracket.  There will be no less than 8 functional setups.  Our goal is at least 16 players.  Any help getting the word out is appreciated.  Proceeds will go towards additional items needed to add to our game recording capabilities.

The tournament main system will be setup to stream via twitch at twitch.tv/trojan1979

      Minimum participants = 65

      Max participants = none

Format - Double elimination bracket, with a live chat room during the tournament. tournament will last 1 day only, if you do not show up for your game in time then you will forfeit. Once a matchup is set, you have exactly 30 mins to finish it and report the score and video in the recap thread, so that gives you around 8 minutes downtime

Breaks - There will be a half hour break after every 3 rounds, so you have plenty time to eat or take a smoke break during the tournament

Signing up - You may only signup for this one time and to make sure this rule is not violated, if you are a unknown that is registering, you will be asked to verify who you are through video chat or posting a quick 1 minute blog on youtube talking about the tournament (that will be your registration)

Chat room - Everyone registered must be in the chat room as long as the tournament is running, if you fail to do this you will be forfeited

Posting scores - There will be a thread for this and soon as your game is completed you must post your score along with a video file for the game. example - joeygats 21 (dal) vs johnymx 20 (jets)  joeygats won the coin toss and chose the match

i will keep track of the matchups you call in a separate thread so you dont call the same one twice
