Alternate History Tampa Bay - Week 1, 1977

After some good draft picks and a lot of offseason activity, Tampa Bay returns with a nearly completely retooled team. Gary Huff now leads a completely rebuilt offense, with Ricky Bell, a rookie, lined up as running back. The defense is now led by second-year vet Lee Roy Selmon. Third-year player Mike Washington, a recent acquisition from Baltimore, also joins the Tampa Bay defense.

In Week 1, the Bucs faced the Philadelphia Eagles at Veterans Stadium. Tampa Bay kicked off to start the game, but drove the Eagles back into their own end zone, with Dave Pear making a sack for a safety.

An Isaac Hagins return put the Bucs down near the Eagles' forty yard line. Tampa Bay quickly put together a fast-moving drive, and Ricky Bell punched a run through the line on first and goal to put Tampa Bay up 9-0.

The Eagles tried to recover from a bad defensive series, but were boxed into a three-and-out between a backward run and two bad passes that dropped to the ground. Dave Pear got a deflection in the backfield for Tampa Bay on third and long. At the end of the first quarter, the score remained 9-0.

The Bucs were not slowed by the quarter break, and three plays into the second quarter, Anthony Davis took a handoff on first and goal and ran it in for a touchdown. Allan Leavitt's extra point made the score 16-0.

On the ensuing drive, Ron Jaworski's scramble attempt was brutally negated by Dave Pear's shoulder pads, and on the next play, Pear tripped up Jaworski in the end zone for another safety, making the score 18-0.

Hagins was injured on the free kick return, but the Bucs drove down the field, and with just a couple of seconds on the clock, Allan Leavitt kicked a field goal to make the score 21-0. Tampa Bay squibbed to end the half.

Halftime score: Tampa Bay 21, Philadelphia 0

On the second-half drive, the Bucs started off rough, with Huff unable to complete passes, the receivers dropping everything, and Ricky Bell fumbling. But a third-and-ten run by Bell came out with a hole, and Bell cut his way through the hole for a touchdown, putting Tampa Bay ahead 28-0.

Tampa Bay's suffocating defense continued to hold out as the third quarter dragged on, allowing some yards but continuing to deny the Eagles any points.

After the Bucs' drive stalled out again, the Eagles took over on a touchback punt. Jaworski took too long in the pocket and was dropped by Pear for 13-yard loss, and Wood took down Jaworski in the end zone on second down for a safety. Tampa Bay's lead increased to 30. On the squibbed safety kick, Tampa Bay recovered, and one play later, Ricky Bell ran for a touchdown, putting the Bucs ahead 37-0.

Tampa's defense continued to pummel the Eagles' offense, piling on more sacks. Tampa collected another safety on Dave Pear's stuffing on a second-down run.

Finally, with seconds remaining on the clock, the Eagles broke the shutout. Tom Sullivan broke free of the defense and scored.

The final score in the game was Tampa Bay 39, Philadelphia 7.

Alternate History Tampa Bay - Super Bowl XI

The straggling expansion franchise that went 10-4 and made it through the playoffs to the Super Bowl.

The heat in Pasadena would determine the NFL champion. Would it be the Pittsburgh Steelers, or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers?

Tampa won the toss, and elected to receive the opening kickoff. Steve Spurrier horrified fans by throwing an interception on his first pass attempt of the game.

The Steelers turned around and lost 13 yards in their first 3 plays, kicking a field goal and taking a 0-3 lead.

Spurrier and the Bucs responded quickly after a brilliant kick return by Johnson. Spurrier chucked a 30-yard completion and Louis Carter finished the drive with a long, serpentine run. Tampa took the 7-3 lead.

The Steelers moved backward again, unable to get Rocky Bleier much in the way of yardage, and were forced to punt. Spurrier came out and immediately tossed a long completion to Smith, leading to a first-and-goal situation. Carter pushed the ball forward on consecutive carries, and on third and goal, Williams punched the ball up the gut and scored a touchdown to put Tampa Bay up 14-3.

Bleier received the opening two handoffs, and exploded on the second for a fifteen-yard gain and a first down. He exploited the defense on the next play for an 80-yard touchdown scamper, untouched. The Steelers were still down 14-10.

Spurrier put together a beautiful drive in the final minute, but Hagins ran out of bounds on the last play of the half 17 yards short of the end zone, ending the half at 14-10.

The Steelers came out with an off-tackle handoff to Bleier, who immediately scored on the hapless Bucs' defense, making the score 14-17.

In response, Steve Spurrier put together a brilliant drive, completing each of his attempts, scrambling for almost 30 yards, and handing off the ball to Louis Carter on first and goal to score a touchdown. Tampa Bay took a 21-17 lead.

The Steelers failed to get a drive going, in spite of a nice Franco Harris run, and were forced to punt with just seconds left in the third quarter.

Tampa was holding on to the lead, until, with three minutes left in the game, Franco Harris scored a touchdown to put the Steelers up 21-24. Spurrier led his team back from a 4th-and-36 situation to get his team in scoring position, and handing the ball to Louis Carter on 1st-and-goal to score the game-winning touchdown.

Alternate History Tampa Bay - NFC Title Game, 1976

Despite all odds, two NFC Central teams remained standing at the end of the NFC playoffs: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Chicago Bears.

In spite of only being a second seed, the Bucs had managed to hold it together and keep playing home games throughout the playoffs. This game at Tampa Stadium was no exception. The crowd showed up wearing orange and white to support the local team.

The Bears won the toss and chose to kick, and the Bucs responded by putting together a long drive consisting mostly of Steve Spurrier scrambles, capped off by a three-yard touchdown run by Essex Johnson. The drive ate up almost the entire first quarter, with the post-score kickoff ending it officially.

The Bears responded to the score with a promising drive that stalled on a badly-executed third play. Tampa Bay received the punt near the fifty yard line, but a quick scoring drive put the Bucs up 14-0 before the Bears even seemed to know what was happening.

The Bears managed to put together a quick, two-play drive that netted them a touchdown. Tampa tried to put up another score, but were turned away leading into halftime.

The Bears returned in the second half with a strong start, scoring a touchdown and tying the game. Thomas flubbed the kickoff, however, and McGriff returned the kick from his own 24 to the 50-yard-line. Tampa's drive stalled near the 20, but Mirro Roder connected on a field goal to put Tampa back in the lead, 17-14.

Baschnag fumbled Roder's kickoff, but the Bears recovered at their own 8-yard-line and set up to go. On second down, however, Avellini let go of a pass early under pressure in his own end zone and was picked off by Stone. The Bucs ran their way downfield. A first-and-goal run from Essex Johnson had Bucs fans holding their breath when he fumbled, but Ed Williams recovered at the one-yard-line, and the Bucs scored on the next play, courtesy of a Williams run up the gut.

With the score 24-14, it was clear that Chicago had their work cut out for them. Driving downfield, Chicago got into scoring position, only for Avellini to cough up the ball in the pocket. Tampa Bay recovered, and prepared to work the clock. However, Essex Johnson had an embarrassing fumble on the first play of the drive, giving the ball back to the Bears. Harper took a handoff, scooted through the hole, and scored from almost thirty yards out to put the Bears back in contention. With the score 24-21, Chicago still needed a small miracle to win the game. After a slow start, Williams caught a checkdown toss and ran out the clock with a bruising run.

Tampa Bay will go on to play the Pittsburgh Steelers and their Steel Curtain Defense in the Super Bowl!

Alternate History Tampa Bay - Divisional Round, 1976

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers hosted the Dallas Cowboys for the divisional round of the NFC playoffs.

The Bucs came in as marginal favorites over the paper-superior Cowboys. But the Bucs have played a tough schedule, and with that comes greater expectations.

The first quarter was relatively rocky for both sides. After an early score, Dallas gave up tons of yardage before forcing a turnover at their own one-yard-line against Essex Johnson. Tampa Bay began striking back toward the end of the first quarter, and in spite of an Essex Johnson fumble that slipped out of bounds, Steve Spurrier hooked up with tight end Bob Moore for a touchdown.

Tampa Bay followed this up by being gashed on long runs by the Cowboys, culminating in a Scott Laidlaw touchdown. Herrera connected on the extra point, giving the lead back to America's Team.

Essex Johnson went down late in the first half with an injury, and was replaced by Novak, a tight end. Steve Spurrier fumbled on the final down of the first half, but Tampa Bay's offense prevented what looked like a go-ahead touchdown.

Roder's second-half kickoff was botched, and Dallas managed to recover the short kick near midfield. Tampa Bay's defense recovered from its first-half tailspin by coming out and immediately sacking quarterback Roger Staubach on a play-action rollout. Another excellent down by Tampa Bay's defense had the Cowboys pinned deep. One down later, Dallas was forced to punt for the first time in the ball game.

Dallas' punt went ten yards deep in the end zone, and the returner took a knee.

Spurrier recovered from an overthrow, tossing a beautiful deep spiral pass to put the Bucs on the right side of the 50-yard-line, and then following it up with a nice scamper to put the Bucs in scoring position. After the drive stalled out, Mirro Roder stepped on the field and drilled a field goal to put the Bucs closer at a score of 10-14.

The third quarter ended with the Cowboys forced to punt. The Bucs faced a tough challenge in the fourth quarter down by four points.

With under three minutes left, the Bucs mounted a final drive to put themselves ahead. On the back of Steve Spurrier, Tampa Bay scored on a touchdown pass from Spurrier to his tight end Douglas.

After the kick return, Dallas had a chance at a last gasp play, down 14-17, but failed to capitalize. Tampa Bay has officially moved on to the NFC title game.

Rom Development/Hacking News - Testing out loading conditions into the game without nestopia state file

Today I tested making all my players excellent in the second quarter. I was able to effectively "LOAD" excellent conditions into the game.

There are many ways manipulating game memory that is mostly static could be used.

1. Have conditions carry over from game to game by having a program read in the current condition file on both sides so as not to desynchronize the game

2. Being able to recreate conditions and stats in the case of a disconnect.

Both players would have to load the conditions in or the game would desynchronize

Currently this function does not exist in nestopia during netplay. Cool stuff.
